Rx: SEC ORB P M – TR P XIIII COS V around, DES VI in exergue, Securitas seated l. holding globe, on seat behind her a sphinx seated l., on which she rests her l. elbow. Scarce, eight specimens in Reka Divina hoard. Part of the last regular issue to record an emperor’s designation to his next consulship (DES VI). The sphinx on which Securitas rests her elbow was pointed out on a BM Sestertius by Mattingly, BMC 630 note, pl. 108.7. In the Forvm Ancient Coins online discussion group in 2010, participant “Moomoth” recognized the same sphinx on a COS V Denarius. Our coin may be the first COS V DES VI Securitas Denarius on which the sphinx has been recognized.
